Energetic properties

Tourmaline Quartz is a combination of black tourmaline embedded in clear quartz. It carries the properties of both stones, making it grounding, protective, and cleansing. The black tourmaline provides strong protection against various forms of radiation and negative energy, while the clear quartz contributes purifying and healing qualities.

Suitable for children from around 6 years old.

Formation

Tourmaline Quartz forms when tourmaline crystals grow within a quartz matrix. This process is known as tourmaline inclusion in quartz and occurs when molten magma cools slowly, allowing minerals to crystallize and grow.

In the case of tourmaline quartz, tourmaline crystals enter a liquid solution of molten quartz. As the quartz cools and begins to crystallize, the tourmaline becomes embedded in the quartz structure, resulting in the unique appearance of this gemstone.

This process is relatively rare, as it requires very specific conditions for both tourmaline and quartz to form and merge together. As a result, tourmaline quartz is a fairly unique gemstone with its characteristic mix of colors and patterns.

Etymology

The name is derived from the two primary components of this gemstone: tourmaline and quartz (specifically clear quartz).

Care

Tourmaline quartz is relatively hard and durable and doesn’t require special care. However, it is advisable to cleanse it regularly, as it can absorb a lot of negative energy. It can be cleaned under running water and gently patted dry with a soft cloth. It may also be cleansed and recharged using sage, incense or moonlight.

Origin

Primarily found in Brazil, the United States, Madagascar, Sri Lanka and Russia.

Availability

This gemstone is relatively rare compared to other crystals. It is a natural combination of two minerals; tourmaline and quartz, that are not commonly found fused together in nature.
