Energetic properties
Unakite has a grounding, insightful, and calming effect. It offers insight into blockages and the root causes of problems. This can help break limiting behavioral and thought patterns, stimulating spiritual growth. It also absorbs electromagnetic radiation when placed near electronic devices. Physically, Unakite supports physical recovery after illness and stimulates the body’s self-healing capacity. It is also believed to positively affect the reproductive organs, weight gain, and hair growth.
Suitable for children from around 4 years old.
Formation
Unakite is a type of granite composed of epidote, feldspar, and quartz. It forms through a metamorphic process, where existing rocks are transformed under high pressure and temperature. The formation typically begins with feldspar-rich rocks such as granite or pegmatite, along with green epidote. Through prolonged metamorphism—often due to being deeply buried in the Earth's crust—these minerals interact and form Unakite.
The characteristic green color comes from epidote, while the red, pink, or brown patches usually come from feldspar, most often orthoclase or microcline. The end result is a beautiful rock with a unique combination of green and pink or brown hues. Unakite is commonly found in mountainous regions with a complex geological history, where metamorphic processes have occurred.
Etymology
Named after the Unaka Mountains in the United States, where the stone was first discovered. The Unaka Range is located in the state of North Carolina.
Care
Unakite is relatively hard and durable and doesn’t require special care. It can be cleaned under running water and gently patted dry with a soft cloth. It may also be cleansed and recharged using sage, incense or moonlight.
Origin
Can be found in various locations around the world. Notable sources include the United States, Russia, South Africa, Brazil, China, Germany and Australia.
Availability
Unakite is relatively common and can be found globally, so it is generally not considered rare. However, it may vary in quality and size, and some rarer forms; such as crystals with internal inclusions or exceptionally large specimens, can be more valuable.
