Energetic properties
Tree agate offers grounding, stability, and protection. It promotes inner peace and a calm, down-to-earth attitude. The stone stimulates spiritual and mental growth, as well as logical and rational thinking. It provides a sense of safety and security. Tree agate also enhances strength, confidence, perseverance, and resilience. It is especially suitable for use with plants and trees due to its nourishing energy.Physically, tree agate is believed to support the immune system and help combat bacterial infections.
Suitable for children from around 2 years old.
Formation
Tree agate is a form of dendritic agate, a white or colorless variety of chalcedony. Its characteristic patterns are caused by impurities, most often iron or manganese. In the case of tree agate, the distinctive green inclusions are usually due to minerals like chlorite and hornblende.
Agate forms in rocks with cracks, cavities, or bubbles, often in volcanic or sedimentary environments. These cavities gradually fill with silica-rich material, which deposits in layers along the cavity walls and eventually forms crystals.
Tree agate is sometimes confused with moss agate, as they can look very similar. The main difference lies in the transparency of the chalcedony base—if it's transparent with a grayish hue, it's classified as moss agate. If it's opaque white chalcedony, it’s known as tree agate.
Etymology
Tree agate is a form of dendritic agate and gets its name accordingly. The word 'dendritic' comes from the Greek dendron, meaning 'branches'. The name 'agate' originates from the Greek name for the Dirillo River in Sicily—Achates or Acate. Historians believe this was the site where agate was first discovered by the early geologist and Greek philosopher Theophrastus, around 371–287 BCE.
Historically, all banded varieties of chalcedony were called agate. Technically, tree agate; with its more irregular, branching patterns, does not fit the traditional banded classification, but it is still widely considered part of the agate family.
Care
Tree agate is relatively hard and durable and doesn’t require special care. It can be cleaned under running water and gently patted dry with a soft cloth. It may also be cleansed and recharged using sage, incense, moonlight, or an orgonite charging disk.
As the stone can be slightly porous, it may become discolored or damaged if exposed to harsh chemicals such as cleaning products or perfumes.
Origin
Can be found in many locations around the world, including Australia, Brazil, China, India, Kazakhstan, Madagascar, Mexico, Mongolia, Namibia, Uruguay and the United States.
Availability
Tree agate is common and widely available across the globe.
