Formation

Sunstone is a type of feldspar that gets its characteristic shimmering effect from small inclusions of hematite or goethite, or sometimes copper. This glittering effect, known as aventurescence, is created when light is diffusely reflected off these inclusions.

It typically forms in igneous rocks such as granite and pegmatite.

During the cooling and crystallization of magma, tiny inclusions of minerals like hematite, goethite, or copper may form within the feldspar.

Etymology

The name 'sunstone' comes from its sparkling inclusions that resemble glistening rays of sunlight.

Care

Sunstone is relatively hard and durable and doesn’t require special care. It can be cleaned under running water and gently patted dry with a soft cloth. It may also be cleansed and recharged using sage, incense or moonlight.

Origin

Can be found worldwide. Notable sources include Norway, India, the United States, Canada, Tanzania and Australia.

Availability

Sunstone is relatively common and can be found globally, so it is generally not considered rare. However, it can vary in quality and size. Some rare specimens, such as exceptionally large crystals or those with a highly reflective shimmer, can be more valuable.
