Energetic properties

Shungite offers powerful protection against various sources of radiation and harmful influences. It also purifies and detoxifies the body and cleanses the space in which the stone is placed. It has anti-inflammatory and cooling effects, reduces allergies, stress, and tension headaches, and may assist with insomnia. Physically, it boosts the immune system and supports overall health.

Shungite is suitable for children around 10 years old.

Formation

Shungite forms under unique geological conditions. It is a metamorphic rock that originates from the transformation of organic material—such as ancient plant remains—deposited millions of years ago in shallow lakes and swamps. Over time, this organic matter became buried under sediments and was subjected to pressure and high temperatures, eventually transforming into the stone we now know as shungite.

The formation occurs in low-oxygen environments, allowing the organic components to be preserved. What makes shungite unique is its high carbon content, making it one of the most carbon-rich rocks on Earth. This high carbon content gives shungite its special properties and energetic qualities.

Etymology

Named after the village of Shunga, located in the Karelia region of Russia, where the stone was first discovered.

Care

Shungite should not be exposed to water. It is a softer stone that can be sensitive to scratches, wear, and corrosion, especially when exposed to acidic or alkaline substances. Therefore, it is best to clean shungite gently with a dry cloth and avoid soaking it in water or chemicals. Regular cleansing is recommended, as shungite can absorb a lot of negative energy.

It can also be cleansed and recharged using sage, incense or moonlight.

Origin

Mainly found in the Karelia region of Russia, where large deposits of this stone are located. There are different types of shungite, varying in composition and properties, including regular shungite (also known as Type I) and elite shungite (also known as Type II). Elite shungite is extremely rare and is characterized by a higher carbon content.

Availability

Currently, shungite can only be found in Russia, in the Karelia region. Therefore, it is considered relatively rare. The quality and carbon content also significantly affect its value.
