Energetic properties
Rhodonite is a powerful healer on both emotional and physical levels. It has a calming effect and helps maintain composure during shocking or extreme events. It reduces feelings of anger, irritation, revenge, and hatred. It helps soothe emotional wounds and positively impacts self-destructive behavior and addiction. Physically, rhodonite promotes healing of (internal) wounds and reduces scarring. It also benefits insect bites, the heart, circulation, stomach ulcers, bones, and hearing.
Suitable for children from around 10 years old.
Formation
Rhodonite typically forms as a result of metamorphism, a geological process where rocks are transformed under high pressure and temperature without melting. It originates in manganese-rich rocks. Fluids, such as water and dissolved minerals, seep into the pores and fractures of these rocks, transporting manganese. Under high pressure and temperature, the fluids and minerals react with the existing manganese, resulting in the formation of rhodonite crystals.
These crystals grow slowly within the rock and remain permanently embedded as the rock cools and hardens. As erosion removes the surrounding rock, the rhodonite crystals may become exposed and eventually discovered as gemstones. The stone can vary in color from pink to red, often with dark veins of black manganese oxide—a distinguishing feature of rhodonite.
Etymology
Rhodonite derives its name from the Greek word 'rhodon', meaning 'rose', due to its pink to reddish hue. The name was first given by German mineralogist Christoph Friedrich Jasche in 1819 when he discovered the stone in steel ore deposits in the Ural Mountains of Russia.
Care
Rhodonite is relatively hard and durable and doesn’t require special care. Regular cleansing is recommended, as the stone can absorb negative energy. It can be cleaned under running water and gently patted dry with a soft cloth. It may also be cleansed and recharged using sage, incense or moonlight.
Origin
Well-known sources include Sweden, Australia, India, Madagascar, Mexico, South Africa, Brazil, Canada and the United States.
Availability
Rhodonite is relatively common and can be found around the world, so it is generally not considered rare. However, it can vary in quality and size. Some rare forms; such as crystals with internal inclusions, exceptionally large specimens, or deeply pink to red stones, can be quite valuable.
