Energetic properties

Moonstone is connected to the energy of the moon and the Divine Feminine. It is one of the most important stones for supporting fertility and enhances intuition and self-awareness. The stone strengthens psychic abilities such as mediumship and clairvoyance.

Rainbow moonstone also supports spiritual development and offers protection on a spiritual level. It strongly influences sleep and dreams, helping you remember your dreams more clearly. It is an excellent stone for women who are pregnant or trying to conceive, and it supports pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding. Physically, moonstone has a detoxifying effect and helps balance the hormonal system. It also positively affects digestion, the reproductive organs, and reduces water retention.

Suitable for children from around the age of 6.

Formation

Rainbow moonstone is actually a transparent or white form of labradorite. Technically, it is not a true moonstone, but due to its appearance, characteristic shimmer, and similar energetic effects, it is commonly referred to as rainbow moonstone. Another name for it is white labradorite.

It forms through the crystallization of feldspar minerals in volcanic rocks. As magma cools, crystals form, developing the specific internal structure of plagioclase. The white color is caused by light refraction and scattering within microscopic layers and inclusions in the mineral. These layers reflect different colors, creating the labradorescence effect—an iridescent play of blues, purples, oranges, greens, and yellows that resembles a rainbow.

Etymology

Moonstone gets its name from its unique shimmer and appearance, which resemble the soft glow of the moon. The shimmer shows a phenomenon called adularescence, in which light is scattered within the stone's internal structure, giving it a floating, moonlike effect—hence the name moonstone.

'Rainbow' refers to the multicolored flashes seen when the mineral reflects and refracts light.

Another term for it is white labradorite, although this name is less commonly used.

Care

Rainbow moonstone should not be exposed to too much water. It is a soft stone and sensitive to scratches, wear, and corrosion, especially when exposed to acidic or alkaline solutions. It’s best to gently clean it with a dry cloth and avoid soaking it in water or chemicals.

Cleansing and recharging can also be done with sage, incense or moonlight.

Origin

Well-known sources include Sri Lanka, Australia, Mexico, Madagascar, Poland and India.

Availability

Rainbow moonstone is generally considered less rare than some other types of moonstone. While it is not as widely available as standard moonstone, it is relatively popular and often reasonably accessible.
