Energetic properties

Petrified wood has a gentle, grounding and calming energy. It enhances the connection to the Earth and reduces homesickness—this grounding effect makes one feel more at home. The stone brings calm, a sense of well-being, and supports a down-to-earth mindset, concentration, and self-control. Physically, petrified wood has a positive effect on metabolism and may aid with weight management.

Suitable for children from around 4 years old.

Formation

Petrified wood is fossilized wood formed when all organic material is replaced by minerals.

It forms through the slow process of permineralization. Organic matter such as trees and plants becomes buried under sediment like sand, mud, or volcanic ash. Over time, mineral-rich water seeps into the deposits and gradually replaces the cells and tissues of the organic material. This process results in the hardening and mineralization of the structure while preserving the original form of the wood. The colors and patterns depend on the types of minerals deposited. When the process is complete, the original organic material is fully replaced by minerals, creating durable and highly detailed petrified wood with features of both wood and stone.

Etymology

The name 'petrified wood' refers to the natural process where organic wood is transformed into stone over millions of years. The word 'petrified' highlights the hardening and mineralization of the original wood while maintaining its shape and texture.

Care

Petrified Wood is relatively hard and durable and doesn’t require special care. It can be cleaned under running water and gently patted dry with a soft cloth. It may also be cleansed and recharged using sage, incense or moonlight.

This stone is also particularly suitable for cleansing in the earth—simply bury it in the soil overnight.

Origin

Found in various places around the world, including sedimentary rock layers, deserts, riverbeds, and ancient forest regions. Notable sources include the United States, Australia, Indonesia, Madagascar, Brazil, and parts of Europe and Asia. Exact locations may vary, but petrified wood is typically found in areas once rich in vegetation and where mineralization processes occurred over long periods.

Availability

Occurs worldwide and can be found in many locations. In some areas, it is fairly abundant, while in others it is less common. Generally considered relatively available, though quality, size, and color variations can make some pieces rarer and more valuable than others.
