Energetic properties
Moss agate is grounding and stabilizing. The stone carries a soft, nurturing energy that brings the body, mind, and soul back to their natural and balanced state. It is particularly suitable for recovery after illness, for calming down, or reconnecting with yourself. Moss agate reveals the core of what truly matters within you and around you. It also helps to release fear, stress, and worries, and supports relaxation. Physically, the stone benefits the immune system and overall resistance.
Suitable for children from around 2 years old.
Formation
Moss agate forms through a combination of various minerals and elements under specific conditions. It usually begins as liquid silica (silicon dioxide) seeping into cracks and cavities in rocks, such as volcanic stones. Over time, the silica is deposited in layers, often containing inclusions of iron or manganese. These inclusions give the characteristic green color and the appearance of moss or vegetation within the stone. The iron and manganese oxide minerals create the beautiful, plant-like patterns typical of moss agate. Its formation can take millions of years depending on environmental conditions and host rock.
Etymology
The name 'moss agate' comes from its distinctive pattern, which resembles moss or vegetation embedded within the stone. The term 'moss' refers to the appearance of the inclusions, which look like delicate branches or leaves of a moss plant. This natural pattern is created by dendritic inclusions of iron and manganese oxide minerals spread throughout the agate.
Care
Moss agate is relatively hard and durable and doesn’t require special care. It can be cleaned under running water and gently patted dry with a soft cloth. It may also be cleansed and recharged using sage, incense or moonlight.
Origin
Moss agate is found all over the world. Well-known sources include Brazil, India, the United States, Germany and Australia.
Availability
It is relatively common and globally distributed and is therefore not generally considered rare. However, moss agate can vary in quality and size, and some rare forms; such as those with unique inclusions or exceptionally large crystals, can be more valuable.
