Formation
Lavender quartz is a quartz variety and forms in the same way as other quartz crystals. Quartz is composed of silicon dioxide (SiO₂), one of the most abundant minerals in the Earth's crust. The formation of lavender quartz begins with the deposition of silica-rich solutions in cavities and cracks in rocks. It is generally found in geological formations such as pegmatites, hydrothermal veins, and sedimentary rocks. These solutions contain trace elements such as iron, aluminum, and lithium, which are responsible for the purple hue. These elements interact with the quartz during growth and give the crystal its characteristic color.
Etymology
Lavender quartz is named after its distinctive pink to purple color, reminiscent of lavender flowers.
Care
Lavender Quartz is relatively hard and durable and doesn’t require special care. It can be cleaned under running water and gently patted dry with a soft cloth. It may also be cleansed and recharged using sage, incense or moonlight.
Lavender quartz may fade when exposed to (bright) sunlight.
Origin
Primarily found in Madagascar, where it occurs in large quantities. Other known sources include Brazil, Uruguay, India and the United States.
Availability
Lavender quartz is relatively uncommon and cannot be found worldwide. The quality and size of the crystals also play a role in determining its value.
