Energetic properties

Heliotrope, also known as bloodstone, offers protection, grounding, and brings balance. It has a calming effect on irritation, aggression, and impatience, and enhances control and self-discipline. The stone is also activating and energizing, and provides courage when you feel exhausted or drained. Heliotrope helps with setting boundaries and shielding yourself from negative influences. At the same time, it promotes flexibility and adaptability. It enhances intuition, creativity, and dreamwork. Physically, heliotrope supports the liver, kidneys, intestines, spleen, and bladder. It stimulates metabolism as well as the immune and lymphatic systems.

Suitable for children from around 6 years old.

Formation

Heliotrope forms through the deposition of minerals such as green chalcedony and red jasper. It is often found in volcanic rocks, where silica-rich fluids deposit minerals in cracks and cavities. These deposits undergo processes of pressure, temperature, and time, resulting in the distinctive green base with red spots characteristic of heliotrope.

Etymology

The name comes from the Greek helios meaning 'sun' and tropein meaning 'to turn'. It likely refers to the ancient belief that when polished and held to the light, the stone's sparkle resembled the glow of the setting sun.

Another name for heliotrope is bloodstone, due to the red spots and speckles that resemble drops of blood.

Care

Heliotrope is relatively hard and durable and doesn’t require special care. It can be cleansed by rinsing it under running water and gently patting it dry with a soft cloth. It can also be cleansed and recharged using sage, incense or moonlight.

Origin

Primarily found in countries such as India, Australia, Germany, China, the Czech Republic, the United States and Brazil.

Availability

Heliotrope is generally considered a fairly common crystal and is not particularly rare. It is found in various parts of the world. While it is not a highly rare stone, the quality and intensity of its coloration can vary, which may affect its value and appeal to collectors and gemstone enthusiasts.
