Energetic properties
Moonstone or garnierite is connected to the energy of the moon and the Divine Feminine. It is considered the primary stone for supporting fertility and enhances intuition and self-awareness. Green moonstone helps you connect with the essence of who you are and embrace it, while also providing positive insights to help you reach your goals. It carries a loving and nurturing energy that fosters compassion and promotes emotional balance.
Suitable for children from around the age of 6.
Formation
Green moonstone is technically not a true moonstone, as it doesn’t share the same chemical composition. It is closely related to serpentine and can be associated with olivine. The mineral is therefore also known as garnierite. It is often a combination of nickel ore (garnierite) and feldspar (moonstone).
Garnierite forms primarily from the mineral serpentinized rock. It originates under specific geological conditions, where magnesium-rich rocks (ultramafic rocks) transform into serpentinite through a process called serpentinization. This occurs when these rocks react with water under high pressure and temperature. It is typically found in geologically active regions such as mountain-building zones and tectonic plate boundaries.
Garnierite contains high levels of nickel, which contribute to its characteristic green color.
Etymology
Garnierite is named after the French geologist Jules Garnier, who first described the mineral. It was discovered in the region of Nouméa in New Caledonia, an area rich in nickel ore.
The name green moonstone refers both to its color and its energetic properties—similar to moonstone, as well as its shimmering appearance and color pattern, which closely resemble that of traditional moonstone due to the presence of feldspar.
Care
Green moonstone or garnierite should not be exposed to too much water. It is a soft stone and sensitive to scratches, wear, and corrosion, especially when exposed to acidic or alkaline solutions. It’s best to gently clean it with a dry cloth and avoid soaking it in water or chemicals.
Cleansing and recharging can also be done with sage, incense or moonlight.
Origin
Primarily found in regions with ultramafic rocks, including areas of New Caledonia, the Philippines, Russia, Madagascar and Canada.
Availability
Green moonstone and garnierite occur mainly in serpentinization zones as a secondary mineral resulting from the hydrothermal alteration of ultramafic rocks. While it can be relatively widespread in some areas, the quality and availability of garnierite can vary, making it more difficult to source at times.
