Energetic properties

Chrysoprase has a strong purifying effect on both body and mind. It helps reduce dependency on love and approval from others, and can also help diminish compulsive behaviors and thoughts. The stone is believed to be beneficial for sleep issues, nightmares, and claustrophobia.

It promotes a positive attitude and helps build trust in yourself and in the greater whole. Chrysoprase also supports creativity and openness to spiritual aspects of life. Physically, the stone is said to benefit skin conditions, gout, and the eyes. Due to its detoxifying properties, it can also support the body’s cleansing processes.

Suitable for children from around 6 years old.

Formation

Chrysoprase forms when silica deposits fill cavities and cracks in nickel ore deposits. It is a variety of chalcedony, which is a microcrystalline form of quartz. Its green color comes from trace amounts of nickel, along with iron and manganese. Chrysoprase often occurs in combination with minerals like quartz, limonite, and calcite. Formation usually takes place under hydrothermal conditions and can take millions of years.

Etymology

The name chrysoprase comes from Greek, derived from 'chrysos' meaning 'gold' and possibly prason (leek), prasios (light green), or prasmai (to treasure), referring to both the green hue of the stone and the golden, yellow, or brown nickel inclusions sometimes present.

Care

Chrysoprase is relatively hard and durable and doesn’t require special care. It can be cleaned under running water and gently patted dry with a soft cloth. It may also be cleansed and recharged using sage, incense, moonlight, or an orgonite charging disk.

However, chrysoprase may discolor or become damaged if exposed to harsh chemicals such as cleaning products or perfumes, or if subjected to prolonged exposure to (bright) sunlight.

Origin

Can be found in several parts of the world, including Australia, the United States, Brazil, Madagascar, Russia and Zimbabwe. In Australia, notable deposits are in Queensland and Western Australia. In the U.S., it’s found in Arizona, California, Oregon, and Nevada. Brazil is also a major source, especially in the state of Bahia.

Availability

Chrysoprase is relatively rare compared to other types of chalcedony but can be found in various parts of the world. The quality varies depending on the location.
