Energetic properties
Moonstone is connected to the energy of the moon and the Divine Feminine, making it the most important stone for supporting fertility. It enhances intuition and self-awareness. Black moonstone is associated with the new moon and all things new—such as a pregnancy, a new job, or a new love. It supports you through new beginnings and life changes, and helps you stay grounded and protected during spiritual work while stimulating spiritual development.
Suitable for children from around the age of 6.
Formation
Moonstone is a beautiful gemstone known for its glow and mysterious aura. It primarily forms through the crystallization of the feldspar mineral, specifically the orthoclase and albite varieties.
It usually forms in igneous rocks such as granite and pegmatite, where feldspar crystals slowly grow in a magmatic environment. As the magma cools, the feldspar crystals develop, some forming a specific layered structure.
Black moonstone owes its color to the presence of minerals such as amphibole and magnetite, which give the stone its dark hues. These minerals absorb light and reflect little to no color, resulting in the characteristic black tone. The layered structure is formed by the intergrowth of orthoclase and albite—two minerals with different refractive indices. These layers create the optical phenomenon known as adularescence, which results in the moon-like bluish shimmer.
Etymology
Moonstone gets its name from its unique shimmer and appearance, which resemble the soft glow of the moon. The shimmer shows a phenomenon called adularescence, in which light is scattered within the stone's internal structure, giving it a floating, moonlike effect—hence the name moonstone.
'Black' refers to the stone’s distinct color.
Care
Black moonstone should not be exposed to too much water. It is a soft stone and sensitive to scratches, wear, and corrosion, especially when exposed to acidic or alkaline solutions. It’s best to gently clean it with a dry cloth and avoid soaking it in water or chemicals.
Cleansing and recharging can also be done with sage, incense or moonlight.
Origin
Well-known sources include Brazil, India, Madagascar, Myanmar (Burma), Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Norway, Australia, Germany, Tanzania and the United States.
Availability
Black moonstone is generally considered a relatively rare gemstone. Although it can be found in several locations worldwide, its quality and availability are often limited—adding to its rarity and value.
