Energetic properties
Gabbro is a supportive stone for gradual spiritual and physical development. It has a grounding and stabilizing effect and helps balance the chakras and energy pathways in the body. It is also a good conductor for Kundalini energy. Gabbro expands the aura and provides a stable foundation for spiritual growth. It is closely connected to the third eye, enhancing clairvoyance and the ability to perceive energy in the world. It deepens contact with angels and spirit guides and brings mental clarity. Physically, gabbro is believed to have a positive effect on the heart, blood vessels, and oxygen absorption.
Suitable for children from around 10 years old.
Formation
Gabbro forms through the slow cooling and solidification of magma deep beneath the Earth’s surface. When magma cools gradually, the minerals within it have time to grow and form crystals, resulting in the fine-grained texture typical of gabbro. It is most often associated with intrusive igneous formations such as batholiths and deep magma chambers. Gabbro is also found in oceanic crust, where it forms from magma solidifying beneath the seabed.
It is an igneous rock typically containing a combination of minerals such as chlorite, serpentine, garnet, pyroxene, peridot, hercynite, magnetite, biotite, and white feldspar.
Etymology
The name comes from Italian and refers to a type of dark gray, coarse-grained rock. The word gabbro itself may be derived from the Latin gabbra, meaning 'quarry'. The term was first used by Italian geologist Michele de Fioravanti in the 18th century to describe a type of dark, dense, coarse rock commonly found in the Liguria region of Italy, known for its many stone quarries. Since then, the name has been used worldwide to refer to this type of deep-formed rock.
Gabbro is sometimes informally called 'Blizzard Stone', a trade name used to describe a specific variety of gabbro that visually resembles a snowy landscape during a blizzard; due to its combination of dark basalt-like structures with light feldspar inclusions. It's important to note that 'Blizzard Stone' is not an official geological term but is commonly used in the gemstone and mineral trade.
Care
Gabbro is generally a dense and non-porous stone, which means it is naturally resistant to water. Its low water absorption makes it less vulnerable to damage from moisture, such as cracking or disintegration.
It can be cleansed by briefly rinsing it under running water and gently patting it dry with a soft cloth. Energetic cleansing and recharging can also be done using sage, incense or moonlight.
Origin
Can be found in several places around the world, including Norway, Scotland, Italy, the United States (e.g. California and Minnesota), and Australia.
Availability
This crystal is widely distributed and commonly found worldwide, so it is generally not considered rare. However, gabbro can vary in quality and size, and some rare forms; such as exceptionally large crystals, can be more valuable.
